In depth
The Decree dissolves COPREC, a service created to handle consumer or user claims under the Consumer Protection Law No. 24240, as amended.
The Registry and the Fund, which were established for COPREC's operations, have also been dissolved. The Fund, comprised of fines and approved fees, was used to cover notifications costs and pay conciliators' fees.
The Secretariat of Industry and Commerce of the Ministry of Economy will take over COPREC's pending functions and obligations, including processing unresolved administrative proceedings and applying sanctions, if necessary.
The Decree also repeals sections 1 to 40, 74 and 75 of the Law, as well as Regulatory Decree No. 202/2015.
As stated in the Decree’s recitals, this measure is part of public policies aimed at reducing bureaucracy and simplifying administrative processes. It seeks to downsize the state structure and improve the efficiency of the national government.
From a practical standpoint, the dissolution of COPREC means that local authorities will now be solely responsible for receiving and handling proceedings under Consumer Protection Law No. 24240.
