The Deputy of the Consumer Protection Group of the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) signed the Open Letter to the Fashion and Textile Sector about Environmental Claims of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) with the purpose of building a soft law instrument and protecting consumers against environmental advertising in the fashion sector.

Those who are part of the fashion and textile industry, ICPEN and the SIC recommend reviewing their environmental marketing practices to ensure compliance with Law 1480 of 2011, Consumer Statute, under the commitments made by the Open Letter to the Fashion and Textile Sector about Environmental Claims.

In relation to the product labels, ICPEN and SIC suggest:

  • Fabrics of the clothes should be described clearly and precisely, rather than using vague and general terms
  • Explain what components or processes are covered by the scheme, if this is not immediately clear to the consumer

Although the Letter is a soft law tool, the SIC may use it to interpret and enforce consumer protection laws.
