United Kingdom: Abolition of Police Registration Scheme

In brief

The Government has abolished the Police Registration Scheme with effect from 4 August 2022. Changes to the wider immigration system since the scheme was introduced mean that more people are screened before travel to the UK so those of concern can be identified earlier by the Home Office. Those who have been issued with a visa with the requirement to register on it do not need to go to a police station to register now.

What this means for foreign nationals

  • Already registered - for foreign nationals who have already registered with Police and who have been asked to register again are no longer required to do so.
  • Future notifications - as the Police Registration Scheme has now been closed, those who have already registered will no longer be required to notify the Police of any future change of circumstances.
  • Visa already issued - foreign nationals with a visa that is issued with the requirement to register but yet to travel to the UK will be issued with a new visa or notified in advance of the removal of the requirement to register.
  • Existing appointments - there is no requirement for foreign nationals to pay/or attend existing appointments. Those who have paid for a Police registration appointment already will not be refunded.

It is no longer necessary to retain the Police Registration Certificate for any foreign nationals already in the UK and registered with the Police.

Further details regarding these changes can be obtained by reaching out to your usual contact in our Global Immigration & Mobility team.
