United Kingdom: Increase to Immigration Health Surcharge implementation date confirmed

In brief

The Immigration (Health Charge) (Amendment) Order 2024 has been approved and will come into force on 6 February 2024. The Order increases the Immigration Health Surcharge from GBP 624 to GBP 1,035 a year. The reduced rate for students (and their dependants), Youth Mobility Scheme applicants and under 18s will increase from GBP 470 to GBP 776.  The surcharge is an upfront cost for visa applications of at least six months and visa extensions; for example, the upfront cost for a five year Skilled Worker from 6 February will be GBP 5,175 previously GBP 3,120. The surcharge is in addition to the cost of the Immigration Skill Charge, recently increased Certificate of Sponsorship and application fee. There are exemptions for certain groups and fee-waivers for certain categories; however, there is no opt out provision for private health insurance holders.

Businesses and individuals affected by the 66% surcharge increase should consider filing a visa application before the changes come into force.
