On 29 June 2022, EFPIA published the annual report on "The Pharmaceutical Industry in Figures - Key Data 2022" on its website, which provides an insight into the evolution of the European pharmaceutical industry in the midst of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the EFPIA report, which shows figures for 2020 and 2021, the European pharmaceutical industry sector is growing steadily and now accounts for 23.4% of the world market, employing 840,000 people.

In this respect, Italy displays a leading role compared to other European countries regarding production, where, with a turnover of EUR 34.3 million, it is ahead of both Germany (EUR 32.350 million), France (EUR 23.558 million) and the United Kingdom (EUR 25.323 million). Italy also stands out in pharmaceutical market sales (at ex-factory prices) with a turnover of EUR 23.4 million, in line with the United Kingdom (EUR 24.569 million) and slightly below that of France (EUR 29.552 million).

In spite of these achievements, in the research and development rankings, Italy is in the bottom ranks with an annual investment of EUR 1.6 million compared to EUR 7.8 million in Germany and EUR 7.3 million in Switzerland.
