According to WIPO statistics in 2022, ASEAN had an impressive growth in IP applications. Between 2012 and 2022, the number of trade mark applications grew by 110%, and patent and industrial design applications soared by 70% and 80%, respectively.
A centralised ASEAN IP Register has long been awaited by trade mark practitioners and rights owners, given that the current national IP registers are in different languages, some IP registers may not be accessible to the general public, and some IP registers may not be updated regularly.
A centralised ASEAN IP Register, in a common or single language would enhance accessibility and efficiency for worldwide trade mark practitioners and rights owners, leading to cost and time efficiencies and allowing organisations to review their current portfolios in the ASEAN region as well as make plans for their trade marks.
