In brief
The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) has announced the implementation of the 12th Edition, Version 2025 of the Nice Classification.
This new version will come into force on 1 January 2025 and will be applicable to all trademark applications filed on or after this date.
The current version will continue to apply to applications filed from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2024.
There will be no reclassification of goods and services for applications filed before 1 January 2025.
Key takeaways
These updates ensure that the classification system remains relevant and can accommodate new and emerging industries.
The revised descriptions and removal of obsolete terms also help to streamline the application process and reduce the likelihood of errors.
Trademark applicants should be aware of these changes and ensure that their applications are consistent with, or take into account, the new classification system. Failure to do so might result in delays or rejection of applications.
