Singapore: IPOS invites the public to submit suggested descriptions of goods and services for its Classification Database

In brief

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) is piloting an avenue for interested parties to provide suggestions of descriptions of goods and services to be added into IPOS' Classification Database ("Database"). Interested parties are invited to submit their suggestions by 29 February 2024.

In more detail

From 1 September 2023 to 29 February 2024, members of the public can submit their suggested descriptions of goods and services for consideration to be added into the Database.

A relevant and robust Database will facilitate a more efficient search and classification of goods and services by trade mark applicants and agents for their trade mark applications. IPOS therefore regularly reviews and updates the Database to keep pace with evolving global business markets and technological trends. Suggestions from the public will ensure that the descriptions of goods and services in the Database are reflective of such evolving trends.

Interested parties can submit their suggested descriptions of goods and services here. Other modes of submission will not be accepted.

IPOS will review the suggested descriptions and may, prior to acceptance and addition into the Database, modify them for conformity to its classification practices. Accepted descriptions will be published by IPOS approximately three months after submission.

You may contact IPOS at ipos_enquiry@ipos.gov.sg with the subject "Suggestions for IPOS' Classification Database" for any clarification.

Key takeaways

This IPOS initiative allows brand owners to review their portfolios, brands, scope of goods and services within their business, and assess whether any specification items not currently acceptable to IPOS should be submitted to ensure appropriate coverage and protection for future trade mark applications in Singapore.

This is particularly important if specification objections have been raised by IPOS which were not acceptable, and such specification items are of core importance to brand owners' operations, products and services.
