US treasury sanctions Colombian President Gustavo Petro and key associates

On 24 October 2025, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated Colombian President Gustavo Petro under counternarcotics-related authorities, citing record-high cocaine production and alleged ties to narco-terrorist organizations. The sanctions also extend to his wife Verónica Alcocer, his son Nicolás Petro, and close ally Armando Benedetti for providing financial and material support to Gustavo Petro and his activities that contribute to the international proliferation of illicit drugs.
