In more detail

IPOS is currently accepting applications from interested parties to submit descriptions of new goods and services to be added into IPOS' Database until 30 June 2024 via the IPOS form. For more information about this IPOS initiative, you can refer to our December 2023 client alert and January 2024 client alert.

On 16 February 2024, IPOS published a report as an update on this process, listing the suggested descriptions that have been added into the Database as of February 2024. This list includes descriptions such as "Downloadable software for end-to-end testing of third-party software for functionality and bugs" (Class 9), "Myringotomy tubes" (Class 10), "Ventilation tubes for medical purposes" (Class 10) and "Software as a service [SaaS] featuring software for end-to-end testing of third-party software for functionality and bugs" (Class 42). All accepted descriptions to date can be found here.

You may contact IPOS at ipos_enquiry@ipos.gov.sg with the subject "Suggestions for IPOS' Classification Database" for any clarifications. However, no comments will be provided on the non-acceptance of description(s) submitted.

Key takeaways

The recent report indicates IPOS' ongoing commitment to expand the Database for improved search and classification of goods and services by trade mark applicants and agents for their trade mark applications. As such, brand owners should take the opportunity to consider the newly accepted descriptions against their portfolios, brands, and scope of goods and services within their business, and consider submitting suggestions that will protect the scope of their goods and services in today's market and future years.
